Hair dryer operation: how does a hair dryer work?

Invented in France in the late 1800s, the hair dryer has now become part of our daily lives. But have you ever wondered about how a hair dryer works and why the motor is so important? Find out in this article, along with the most recommended Parlux models.

The hair dryer is invented in France in the late 19th century by hairdresser Alexander Godefroy. Of course, the operation of this primitive hair dryer was very different from today: it was, in fact, a kind of cap connected to the chimney pipe of a stove.

We have to make a time jump to 1911 to find the patent for the hair dryer by the American inventor Gabriel Kazanjian. In this case, the instrument possessed an electric heating element and generated a hand-operated flow of air by means of a hand crank.

Finally, in the 1920s, the first fully electrically operated hair dryers appeared on the market. Inspired by vacuum cleaners that generated air from the exhaust, these early models were bulky and heavy.

Parlux innovation in the operation of hair dryers

One of the greatest innovations in the world of professional beauty is the radical change in hair dryer construction materials. In fact, in 1977 Parlux introduced the Parlux Superturbo 1500 hair dryer, the first hair dryer in the world to be made of plastic, a much lighter and safer material. It gained such acceptance among consumers that the hair dryer's operation and dimensions were refined and improved, eventually resulting in the hair dryers we know today, which are appreciated worldwide.

But how does a hair dryer work in concrete terms?

The operating principle of a hair dryer is quite simple and is based on three basic electrically powered components:

  • the motor
  • the fan
  • the heating element

When the hair dryer is plugged into the electrical outlet and turned on, electricity sets the motor, the fan, and the heating element (if hot air is operated) in motion.

In the operation of the hair dryer, the motor is the key

The operation of the hair dryer depends on an electric motor, which generates the flow of hot or cold air essential for drying hair. This motor actually moves a fan that draws in and moves the air. The power of the hair dryer generally varies between 700 and 2500 watts.

The motor also influences the amount and speed of air coming out of the hair dryer, which, in technical terms, is called airflow rate.

The correct balance between power and airflow are the elements that distinguish a professional hair dryer from a household one.

The models and operation of Parlux hair dryers

As we have seen, the motor is crucial to the proper functioning of a hair dryer and, when choosing, should always be carefully evaluated. The best hair dryers, then, combine the power of the motor with low energy consumption and negative ion and ceramic technologies, which help dry hair quickly, eliminate static electricity from it, and do not dry it out.
